Nurturing the Future of Space: New Space Horizons Conference and Spacehubs Africa

Arabian World Events
Kwaku Sumah, Managing Director, Spacehubs Africa

The New Space Horizons Conference - Africa and the Middle East, hosted by the Egyptian Space Agency in collaboration with Egypt International Airshow, will take place on 2 September 2024 in El Alamein City, Egypt. The event promises to become a cornerstone in the development and expansion of space activities across the region.

A key highlight of the conference will be the participation of Spacehubs Africa, an organisation dedicated to promoting space science, business, and technology across the continent. The Managing Director of Spacehubs Africa, Kwaku Sumah, will be a featured speaker, addressing the critical topic of Innovative Models for Public-Private Sector Collaboration. This is particularly pertinent given the innovative projects and initiatives Spacehubs Africa has spearheaded in countries like Ghana.

Promoting Radio Astronomy in Ghana: A Case Study

Kwaku Sumah recently highlighted the success of one such initiative in an article discussing the PRAGSAC (Promoting Radio Astronomy in Ghana through School Visits and Astronomy Clubs) ‘AstroPhy Ghana’ project, funded by Spacehubs Africa. AstroPhy Ghana aims to construct a small parabolic dish antenna (radio telescope) as a proof of concept and for training purposes, offering valuable learning opportunities to participants interested in astronomy, space science, and data science.

Despite the challenges facing the science and technology sectors in Ghana, including inadequate scientific expertise and advocacy, the launch of the Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory (GRAO) in 2017 marked a significant milestone. This 32-metre telecommunications dish, converted into a radio telescope with the help of South Africa and the UK, is now part of the Square Kilometre Array project, aimed at building the world’s largest radio telescope.

PRAGSAC addresses the gap in astronomy knowledge among Ghanaian students by introducing practical astronomy topics and themes through hands-on activities. These activities include quizzes, outreach programmes, excursions to the GRAO and planetariums, and engaging talks and discussions. In a recent collaboration between Spacehubs Africa and PRAGSAC, students at St. Martha’s Catholic Basic B School in Kasoa, Ghana, were introduced to the solar system and participated in building a solar crown, fostering their curiosity and enthusiasm for space science.

Uniting Efforts for a Brighter Future

The New Space Horizons Conference aims to build on such successful initiatives by exploring essential themes like Space-Based Technologies, Space Science Challenges, Space-Based Applications, and Space Policy & Governance. The event will gather Heads of Space Agencies, senior industry leaders, and top governmental officials from across Africa and the Middle East to discuss and shape the future of the regional space industry.

Kwaku Sumah’s participation underscores the conference's commitment to innovating public and private sector collaboration. His insights into projects like PRAGSAC demonstrate how grassroots initiatives can inspire the next generation of space scientists and engineers. By promoting hands-on learning and nurturing a passion for astronomy and space science, we can develop the skills and knowledge necessary for sustainable growth in the space sector.

Shaping the Future Together

The collaboration between the Egyptian Space Agency, Spacehubs Africa, and other regional and international partners signifies a unified effort to elevate the role of space science and technology in Africa and the Middle East. As we look forward to the New Space Horizons Conference, we are reminded that the students we teach today will be the drivers of our tomorrow. By investing in education and fostering a culture of innovation, we can ensure a brighter future for the region's space industry.

Egypt International Airshow

Taking place at El Alamein International Airport from 3-5 September, Egypt International Airshow will feature a dedicated “Space Zone” centred around the Egyptian Space Agencies’ stand. This area will provide a focused platform for space technology solution providers and innovators, to showcase their capabilities to the Egyptian market, as well as confirmed visiting international space programmes.

Join us at the New Space Horizons Conference and Egypt International Airshow to be part of this exciting journey and contribute to the advancement of space activities in Africa and the Middle East. Together, we can build a sustainable and prosperous future for space exploration and technology.
